Forum for Democratic Change candidate Odo Tayebwa was by last night in a comfortable lead against NRM’s Nasser Basajjabalaba in the Bushenyi/Ishaka municipal by-election.
In unofficial preliminary results from the 25 of the 33 polling stations, Mr Odo had polled 5,122 votes against Basajjabalaba’s 4,203. Opposition supporters had taken to early celebrations, jamming most streets of Bushenyi/Ishaka town. By press time results from eight polling stations had not been received by this newspaper.
The election that ended peacefully saw a sudden change of mood in the entire Ishaka trading centre, a stronghold of the ruling party candidate, while celebrations were already ripe in the Bushenyi part where Mr Tayebwa hails from.
At the tally centre, until 7:30pm, there were only a few agents of the NRM team led by Butambala Woman MP Mariam Nalubega while FDC vice president Salaamu Musumba led the opposition team.
